Show 2005

This year’s show was even better than 2004!. A Very Big Thank You to all who helped, to those who entered and to all who came on the day. We had 372 entries (30% more than 2004), by 37 people, and 27 people won at least one class.

Special thanks to Tony and Eileen Handby and Barry Raw for all their work before, during and after the event; to our judge, Steven Raw, and to Claire Handby for help with the catering. Claire’s Coconut and Lime cake was Cake of the Show by five clear votes!

We hope you enjoyed the ‘tuffing’ demo and can now turn a polystyrene fish box into a realistic and sturdy ‘stone’ trough, and plant it up. If you missed it, we plan to repeat it in Spring.

The produce auction, plant and bric-a-brac sales plus a donation from funds raised £200 for MacMillan Cancer Care. We chose this charity in memory of Joe ‘Sunny’ Wray, a plotholder for many years who sadly passed away this year. This is the first time that we have chosen a national charity.

This year’s trophy and prize winners were:
Burley Model Shield

Eric Emms Trophy

Our judges this year were very pleased with the overall standard of most plots. They found it almost impossible to choose between the top plots, so we have several joint firsts, seconds and thirds this year! The judges from the Leeds Federation of Allotment Gardeners also commented on the improved all-round standard when they visited the site. Many congratulations to our winners, who all received vouchers to spend at the hut. Keep up the good work!

Congratulations too to our Junior plotholders, each of whom cultivated their own personal area within the family plot, and who each received a prize of garden tools.. As they are all different ages, they were all awarded a first prize. Writing as one who started gardening this same way at the age of eight, your editor says the earlier you catch the gardening bug, the deeper it takes hold!
