After all the nice weekends this summer, the weather let us down on the day before the show, with rain keeping people away, and only a few entries came in on the Saturday.
However the Show Day was fine and we received many entries in the morning, resulting in a hectic time for those receiving and staging entries. To add to this, the wind started to blow which played havoc with the entries – plants blowing over, exhibits tipping off paper plates, entry forms blowing away, however with the aid of sellotape and staples all was well in the end and we once again had over 300 entries over the 40+ classes.
Almost 30 different people were awarded prize certificates, with the prize for the best exhibit in the show going to François Scofield for his “Squash Caterpillar”.
The show was attended and enjoyed by many plotholders and friends and we were particularly pleased to see Don Mellor, who was a plotholder for many years and who judged the show until a few years ago. Over 30 people stayed for the barbecue, to enjoy the best weather of the day.
The Grand Raffle prize of £150 to spend at Argos was claimed by ticket number 30.
Thank you to all who helped to make the show a success, the helpers, before during and after the show, all who baked for the cafe, Michael for his plant stall, Joe for the Tuffa demonstration, all who entered their produce and all who came along to enjoy the day.
The auction of produce after the show raised the sum of £100, which has been donated to the Burley Lodge Centre. This hosts the Green Room Healthy Living project which gives children and parents in Burley the opportunity to learn the benefits of a healthy diet including fresh locally grown food at the Green Room Café. The Centre at 42-46 Burley Lodge Road is currently being refurbished and the Café is closed, but they hope to re-open early in the New Year.

Our judges this year were very pleased with the overall standard of most plots. They found it almost impossible to choose between the top plots, so we have several joint firsts, seconds and thirds this year! The judges from the Leeds Federation of Allotment Gardeners also commented on the improved all-round standard when they visited the site. Many congratulations to our winners, who all received vouchers to spend at the hut. Keep up the good work!

Congratulations too to our Junior plotholders, each of whom cultivated their own personal area within the family plot, and who each received a prize of garden tools.. As they are all different ages, they were all awarded a first prize. Writing as one who started gardening this same way at the age of eight, your editor says the earlier you catch the gardening bug, the deeper it takes hold!
