Showing your produce

The most important thing is to read the schedule and show the correct number in the correct class. It’s no use entering French beans in the runner bean class or an African Violet in the foliage pot plant class. If the schedule calls for 6 of an item, show 6, not 5 or 7.

SIZE- Isn’t that important, (except classes 23 & 24), quality is what counts. Anything you are showing should be fresh, and where more then one is exhibited they should all match as closely as possible in size shape and colour. Don’t mix varieties, they are unlikely to match

TERMS
Entries - means registering your entries, when you do this you will be given a ticket which you need to keep and then display next to your entry, on the showbench.

Staging - means placing your exhibit/entry on the showbench, so that they look at their best.

HINTS & TIPS

Beans – should have a short piece of stalk attached, cut them with scissors rather then just snapping them off, they should be young, straight and matching in length.

Root vegetables - should be washed and tops trimmed as in the schedule. Aim for even size veg.

Potatoes – should be washed. White potatoes have no colour at all. If they are showing any colour on the skin, even just a ‘red eye’, they are classed as coloured.

Onions & Shallots – dressing means roots trimmed and the top tied with raffia or string. Come to a demonstration to find out how to dress them.

Cucumbers/Courgettes, etc. -If the flowers are still attached, leave them in place, they could score more points for that.

Any other fruit/vegetable – means just that. If there isn’t a class for something you are proud of, show it here. If you are unsure if it’s classed as a fruit or veg, just ask.

Tomatoes - These should be shown with calyx (green bits) still in place, and make sure you enter them in the correct class.

Jams and Pickles - We do not go by WI rules and insist on a particular type of jar &/or label. As long as the jar is clean and suitable, we don’t mind, it’s the contents that count.

Fun Section– Open to all and anything goes, why not let your imagination work.

Top Vase & Top Tray – why not have a go? Ask if you’re unsure.

If you need some advice on what to show and how to show, either come to a demonstration, or ask advice on the Saturday. We will try and help on Sunday too, but we are usually very busy and may not be able to spend much time with you.

IF YOU ARE UNSURE ABOUT ANYTHING...
...PLEASE ASK.
